Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 10 of the Best Social Media Tools for Entrepreneurs

  • msfreeman · 1 month ago
You are correct in saying many of these tools have been heard of. I like to add that they a probably not being properly used. The strength of your article is in the depth of detail you gave each item and the Pro Tips were of most benefit.

I have signed up for several new services and look forward to using the ones I already have correctly now.

Great article but I didn't see anything about ecommerce? Take a look at http://www.bigcommerce.com - it's the MailChimp of ecommerce! We're about to launch 4 stores on it for clients. Very designer friendly.
  • Honey Singh · 1 week ago
No doubt the tools are common and great for use.
Now a days every one is digging into social media and i guess does the term "social media" coined up while i was in the school. :P

Anyway besides twitter, youtube, facebook and other its quite essential to analyse the metrics of social media and i use bit.ly, socialtoo, Xinureturns, Socialmention, Blogpulse, PostRank, ViralHeat and Broadtracker for social media tracking tools that can help in social analytics.

Being active in these social media spheres is important, but don't get overwhelmed by trying to participate in all of them. It is important to determine what social media tools are best suited for your company and then stick with them. Being highly active is a hand full of social media networks is better than being moderately active in every social media network.

Nice article ! Thanks for sharing !

This is a great list. I knew about all of these products, so it's certainly nothing new.

I'd quite like to see some new faces though. I've just started using glasscubes.com (for example) which has revolutionised how I'm working. It's at least on a par with Basecamp and in fact, I prefer it. However, you never seen it or different sites in lists like this - probably because it's a bit different. Still...

It's funny that once MySpace was in these lists too... sign of the times maybe?

    Where's the next big thing?
  • Cyril Arnaud · 1 month ago
    +1 for glasscubes.com
It just changed the way we do business, in a great and efficient way !

Shoot! Wish we could've got http://PitchEngine.com on that list! I'm the founder, who happens to be an entrepreneur as well, but I do believe wholeheartedly that we are an excellent tool for all entrepreneurs, especially those doing their own public relations. 13,000 brands use our social platform to create and share releases today!

Great post though - I use almost all of the above to build my own business!
  • anneonymity · 1 month ago
I've actually used Pitch Engine for clients before. It is a pretty neat platform that beefs up your standard press releases since you can include multimedia assets with it.

Oh, and I've eaten a chocolate covered grasshopper that grasshopper.com sent my office awhile back... tasted like a KitKat (with legs).

Barb - Very nice set of tools here, most of which I am familiar, but you managed to give one golden site that I was previously unaware of and will take action on incorporating into my social media pillar.

They say it only takes one actionable new idea per day to gain massive results.

Thank you for all of your excellent contributions!

Love this article, am actually using Grasshopper for almost a year now and I also know few of them. They are very successful entrepreneurs that's why it's no wonder they came up with this great article!

Again thanks for sharing , tweeted and retweeted.

Interesting list, some names that I'm not so familiar with yet. Always learning with SM. One of the things that makes it both so much and useful.

Great article. I'd never heard of a couple of those sites before. I would love to see an article in the future that talks about a hypothetical business actually going through the motions of utilizing these tools, giving examples of how each would progress the business.

Startups are one of the most overlooked groups of social media users- most advice articles seem to be geared towards established companies or individual entrepreneurs. This article will be a big help to startups that don't have a dedicated marketing department.

This is an awesome list Barb. One thing I'll add about Basecamp. It's a great product but can be rather expensive and feature-lacking. The big one that comes to mind is when you start getting into recurring activities and on-going/long-term clients.

Toodledo has been a fantastic program for me to handle projects/to-dos. The UI isn't that great, but the functionality is Top-notch. You can duplicate almost any Basecamp feature--folders, milestones, goals, todos, etc. Toodledo also has fantastic integration (ical, Gcal, igoog, Firefox, etc). The price point on their "Pro" version is phenomenal. I'd give it a look.

May I also suggest some sort of survey tool to check customer satisfaction, business evaluation form etc.

    Good options are:
http://www.surveymonkey.com (free under 100 answers and 10 questions)
    http://www.surveypirate.com (free)

I concur with most of your points on the use of video. Video is certainly becoming used more and more as its effective in giving the online user a richer experience which in turn helps your conversions. My tip here would be to have that video on your site and not a third party site like Youtube. Embed the videos on your site as this is where you want your users to be. Use Youtube to do that or few other companies that provide a better service for this like www.vimeo.com for people who are not selling stuff and www.vzaar.com for people who are using video to sell products or services. Both services don’t have ads and the user experience and video quality is awesome.

I cant believe you put basecamp here - there are way cheaper (and free) apps on the market - hard to pay 24$ for a startup which is bootstrapping!
