Tweeple twittering the latest events or happenings surely brings more cred to the online social communication world as a real force to be reckoned with, as with these examples above and my own personal experiences of instant news have shown.

When we had those devastating bush fires 2 months ago people were twittering from their own houses watching the flames roaring across the bush heading for Marysville and other townships, tweeting about that live and seeing it first hand in close proximity of where the fires were.

The rest of us were re-tweeting their observations and trying to help as we could, by just getting the news out there hoping to help whoever was watching & reading at the time tweeting to "get out of the area"..

Even last month while sitting tweeting we had a slight earthquake or tremor which at the time was un-nerving but we (Melbourne twitter folk) had some kind of security that we'd be ok cause we'd tweeted the entire thing, live as it was happening.

A tweep from Germany who was at his PC doing his Geographical thesis on earthquakes was actually watching a live Earthquake Watch feed at that very same time and tweeped the location of the quake (100K SE of Melbourne CBD) to let us know where it actually was. He even tweeped the size of the tremor for our information.

This was all live, as it was happening, within a few seconds of feeling the first tremor. Unbelievable.

Funnily enough, the news services started to "exclusively" release info to the news desks which in fact took about an hour later to surface.

Of course us tweeple by now were well over it and onto another topic, "how fast is the news really".

Twitter to me is one powerful unique unit. It enables us all to be in contact with anyone else who's a tweep. any time, anywhere, always ready to "News" the news as it happens or within seconds of it happening.

Now that's what I call "Instant".

I think it's really similar to CB radio in the 70s. I explain it to older people that way and they get it right away, whatever "it" there is to "get."

I see Twitter as a step beyond the self-expression of blogs in such that in modern societies constance of busy busy activity where all of our time is taken up by activities.

The idea of sharing a thought, reading insights of those who you've known for a while or perhaps met online... or follow information is a very human thing that modern living has robbed us of. Twitter's effectiveness comes from addressing that which we have lost in just sharing information with people.

Don't forget the plane crash in Amsterdam (2009 February). Where a plane landed in the middle of a field. It was immediately reported through Twitter and made the poster famous. (one minute fame ;))

Twitter is excellent for breaking news - the Fifth Summit of the Americas (#fifthsummit) was the singular news source after the media pool was put out of the meetings and they closed the door. When the riot police attempted to shut down a peaceful protest, Twitter got media and supporters to the venue, eventually getting a senior police officer there to prevent disastrous police action.

The marriage proposal struck me... It took the guy 15 years to finally propose and then he does it via a 5 second Tweet. Probably sent her a diamond ring from the Facebook gift shop.

You'll get the latest scoop there because it's faster than any other medium. And it's a place to have your say (like graffiti on a bathroom wall). This is the era of real people rather than celebrities. The internet is a great leveler. Anyone can make their mark. Look at Susan Boyle. 30+ Million Youtube views. Because she's a real person that we can relate to and root for. It's about emotional connection.
