Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 10 Most Extraordinary Twitter Updates

  • CS · 8 months ago
The first one shouldn't count. Blissful happiness is redundant and doesn't make sense. Additionally, where is the question? I see the question mark, but the tweet is a declaration. Well, I guess if we're considering it "Extraordinary" because it makes no sense, I guess I could get behind it.

I'd have to add the TwitPic of the US Airways flight in the Hudson, tied in with #6 - not only did he break the story but he had a striking image to go with it.
  • theChampy · 8 months ago
I work for the ABC affiliate in Tampa and we saw that picture on Twitter before anyone else had a picture, so we were able to use it for our breaking news story. It was great.
  • Monica Wright · 8 months ago
I agree, the Twitpic tie in with the Hudson River landing is possibly what pushed Twitter over the edge as a "breaking news source" (film at 11 ... ).

The baby update, 'Arrested' and the earthquake one - they're the three that really demonstrate the diverse power of Twitter and its ilk.

    Great article, Ben, thanks.

I have been using Twitter since June of last year. I am a social studies teacher who has built quite the learning network on Twitter. Last week I decided to test the power of this network to see how much power an average person like myself has. In a nutshell, I wanted to see if I could get my network to donate $1 to send teacher and edublogger, Richard Byrne, to the National Education Computing Conference. In just under a week we are over 1/3 of the way to our goal! Thanks to Twitter for making this possible. (keyword search "NECC Newbie for more info)

Just when I thought there was nothing more pathetically unromantic than the marriage proposal on the stadium Jumbotron, along comes Twitter.

Worse, along comes some lunkhead who uses it...

Fun article! But i was hoping to see @dlprager's tweeting and video casting when he had a stranger in his house and documenting everything, gaining strenght from the replies to deal with the stranger while tweeting about the guy in his house.

    Ghey.

What's next? The 10 Most Extraordinary Phone Calls? Blog postings? Letters to the editor? Twitter is instant messaging via the Internet - a communication mechanism (mmm, that's all folks!) that seems to appeal most to those who crave attention. Just sayin. 99% of Tweets are monotonous blather if my few weeks using Twitter is any indication.

Hows this for a different type of tweet!? it's for those who love to cook or even for those who just like to eat! The idea is based on simple and quick one liner recipes that can be shared across the globe in an ever green way!

Whats the inspiration? In this fast paced modern world we all live in who has time to prepare and cook healthy, fresh and delicious meals on a regular basis?

Three great past experiences of my life have led me to write and inspire others along the way. Firstly I used to do product development and marketing for an online 'convenience styled' gourmet food company called Leapingsalmon.com; where all meals were prepared in advance by Michelin Star establishments, the idea was superb, you would order your 3 course meal online and within 24 hours, no matter where you were in the UK, your food would be delivered in a very swanky 'coolerbag' - all ingredients were prepared up until the point of cooking, from there you would spend between 10 minutes and 30 minutes putting the final touches together to your own Michelin starred home meal!

The 2nd great experience was that I co-authored a book called 'The Man that Can', which was all in aid of Charity! This book was simply developed by men for men, to cook for their partners! A truly inspirational book, which has had some excellent write ups. The book can be seen on the Norwood website! http://www.norwood.org.uk/How-you-can-help/even...

And the 3rd most inspirational moment to this whole idea was that I spent many years training to be a chef, having qualified from Westminster School of Catering and having worked as a chef for many years its is true to say that one thing I have learnt is that an amazing meal can be made without fuss and in minutes, and you don't need to be a chef to do it!

To make this happen I've created what I call 'Tasty One Liners' that are easy to follow quick kitchen delights.

Add your own, and get sharing! No Long recipes, easy ideas which puts ones mind to work, and really gets those juicy inspirational thoughts going! So get sharing and enjoy!

Theres a group on facebook called Tasty One Liners, and the twitter name to follow is 'chef_pete'

The website: www.tastyoneliner.com is coming soon!

Here are a few examples of what I mean:

    • Dnner:1 egg, 250grms mince, 2tsp flour, squirt ketchup, chpd onions, squirt worcester, 1tsp mustard mix & roll into balls simmer in tom sauce mmm..

The reporting of Southwest Air's Captain Sullenberger's amazing "miracle on the Hudson" landing was first reported in Twitter, with two pictures uploaded as well- one by a nearby boa captain and one by a passenger. This Twitter stream has haunted me all week. I wandered into it Tuesday between 6:50 "She's still requiring massive amounts of oxygen and constant breathing treatments. Docs are still trying to figure out the problem," and 7:01 "They're going to intubate her, I'm freaking out." "Her" was the tweeter's 17 month old daughter, Maddie, and she passed away that evening. Since then, largely via Twitter, money is being raised, not just to defray burial costs but for the March of Dimes in #Maddie's honor. I don't know these people. I didn't even follow her on Twitter before that tweet, but it's been heavy on my heart and in my thoughts all week. http://twitter.com/mamaspohr http://tinyurl.com/cyahnq

i'm a little mystified as to how someone in california could break news about an event occurring in china. would he not have to have gotten that news from somewhere?

and I find the implication absurd that reports from "official" news sources are somehow more objective than those from "unofficial" sources. anyone laboring under a delusion that established news outlets are objective is either lacking in peception to a stunning degree or has not come into contact with an established news outlet since about 1910.

On July 29, 2008 I was watching @successfool’s Ustream broadcast when @ericfarewell and a few other people that were on the chat reported they were having an earthquake in California.

Alejandro (successfool) turned on CNN to see what was going on. It was at least 10 minutes after we learned of it that the mainstream media issued reports of it. By that time http://search.twitter.com had already been updating new tweets about the earthquake every 5 to 10 seconds.

It was also through the tweets of Congressman Culberson (@johnculberson) from the House floor that I first learned of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s efforts to silence the Republican’s request for a vote on domestic drilling by turning off the lights, cameras and microphones.

In these two instances it was definitely Twitter that reported the news -before the “news”.

THANKS TO TWITTER AND TO ITS REMARKABLE TWEEPS, FOR THE FIRST TIME,
MY TWO PERSONAL HASHTAGS WERE UNITED IN THE REALITY !

Please, listen to this Twitter fairy tale :
Once upon a time, I painted a real-false Malevich and offered it to a Russian friend of mine. I took a photo and posted it on Twitter :
1:54 PM Apr 1st from Gyazickr
"Painted a real-false Malevich and offered it to a Russian friend of mine.
    http://tinyurl.com/dcj3zx"

One of my followers, @petitesphrases, saw the photo and DM to me : I want the same for a gift to my wife.
Please, make something joyful, we just got a baby and I want to offer her a present.
He sent me a photo of his baby in the cradle.
I asked to my Russian friend to tell me how to write in Russian "Susanna", name of the baby-girl and so, I painted a "SUPREMATIST PORTRAIT OF A BABY-GIRL", sent it to petitesphrases and tweeted twice:
10:51 PM Apr 15th from web
"« Suprematist portrait of a baby-girl», I especially painted for @petitesphrases, happy father of Suzanne, who asked for it on TWITTER."
10:55 PM Apr 15th from Gyazickr
"Suprematist portrait of a baby-girl. For Suzanne. http://tinyurl.com/c66tfh"

And so, @petitesphrases founding the canvas ok, retweeted the tweet:
11:16 PM Apr 15th from TweetDeck
"RT @waltercolor: « Suprematist portrait of a baby-girl», I especially painted for @petitesphrases, happy father of Suzanne, who asked for it"

So, why is this a Twitter fairy tale ?

Cause @petitesphrases and Twitter allowed me to link my 2 passions : Malevich and .... breastfeeding.!
I do art and art history, but I'm also the author of a book about breastfeeding "Guide de l'allaitement et du sevrage" (I'm french, in fact).
So, as Suzanne was newborn and her mother breastfed her, with my canvas, I offered also my book about best breastfeeding practices.

I must say that, even in my best dreams, I never thought i could one day reunite in the real life this 2 very different topics that took both a great place in my life, but in separate paths.
But with Twitter, it went possible to associate these 2 subjects in the reality of one newborn, a baby with art-lover parents.

For the first time, my two hashtags, #malevich and #breastfeeding, my personal intellectual DNA, were united in the reality, thanks to Twitter and thanks to its remarkable tweeps !

Very cool! I only learned about Twitter recently but I think it's a great concept. Bite-sized bits of reality. Why watch the news? Find out what's going on on Twitter. You'll get the latest scoop there because it's faster than any other medium. And it's a place to have your say (like graffiti on a bathroom wall). This is the era of real people rather than celebrities. The internet is a great leveler. Anyone can make their mark. Look at Susan Boyle. 30+ Million Youtube views. Because she's a real person that we can relate to and root for. It's about emotional connection.

Twitter is excellent for breaking news - the Fifth Summit of the Americas (#fifthsummit) was the singular news source after the media pool was put out of the meetings and they closed the door. When the riot police attempted to shut down a peaceful protest, Twitter got media and supporters to the venue, eventually getting a senior police officer there to prevent disastrous police action.

Don't forget the plane crash in Amsterdam (2009 February). Where a plane landed in the middle of a field. It was immediately reported through Twitter and made the poster famous. (one minute fame ;))

I see Twitter as a step beyond the self-expression of blogs in such that in modern societies constance of busy busy activity where all of our time is taken up by activities.

The idea of sharing a thought, reading insights of those who you've known for a while or perhaps met online... or follow information is a very human thing that modern living has robbed us of. Twitter's effectiveness comes from addressing that which we have lost in just sharing information with people.

I think it's really similar to CB radio in the 70s. I explain it to older people that way and they get it right away, whatever "it" there is to "get."

Tweeple twittering the latest events or happenings surely brings more cred to the online social communication world as a real force to be reckoned with, as with these examples above and my own personal experiences of instant news have shown.

When we had those devastating bush fires 2 months ago people were twittering from their own houses watching the flames roaring across the bush heading for Marysville and other townships, tweeting about that live and seeing it first hand in close proximity of where the fires were.

The rest of us were re-tweeting their observations and trying to help as we could, by just getting the news out there hoping to help whoever was watching & reading at the time tweeting to "get out of the area"..

Even last month while sitting tweeting we had a slight earthquake or tremor which at the time was un-nerving but we (Melbourne twitter folk) had some kind of security that we'd be ok cause we'd tweeted the entire thing, live as it was happening.

A tweep from Germany who was at his PC doing his Geographical thesis on earthquakes was actually watching a live Earthquake Watch feed at that very same time and tweeped the location of the quake (100K SE of Melbourne CBD) to let us know where it actually was. He even tweeped the size of the tremor for our information.

This was all live, as it was happening, within a few seconds of feeling the first tremor. Unbelievable.

Funnily enough, the news services started to "exclusively" release info to the news desks which in fact took about an hour later to surface.

Of course us tweeple by now were well over it and onto another topic, "how fast is the news really".

Twitter to me is one powerful unique unit. It enables us all to be in contact with anyone else who's a tweep. any time, anywhere, always ready to "News" the news as it happens or within seconds of it happening.

Now that's what I call "Instant".

Great article, nice little nuggets to share with others or retweet about the power of social media and especially the Twitterverse. Has anyone Twittered while having sex yet? If not I will volunteer. ; )

Great list. I also like this comment from @kliehm: "@Schwarzenegger Could you pls ask Twitter about the lack of accessibility for disabled? It's possible via API (@AccessibleTwitr), but still."
