But in fairness to NNW, they're syncing with Google Reader now, too. I'm checking out Gruml to see if it syncs better, but NNW does a mostly-OK job.

I would replace tweetdeck on your list with destroytwitter. http://www.destroytwitter.com much lighter resource wise and cleaner UI wise.

I switched from tweetdeck along time ago and have never looked back.

TweetDeck is great i just wish they would integrate Twicli so I can tag people into photos and not have to be stuck with useless twitpic or yfrog

After covering software for a few years and now working for a software company, I've learned that flipping the perception switch from free to commercial never goes well. It creates a massive wave of bad vibes, bad press, and bad customer service cruft that the developers have to spend a huge amount of time dealing with instead of making great software.

Calling Skitch "free" right now does a disservice to the developer and creates the wrong perception in peoples' minds. If you want people to check out an app, tell them why it's great and give them a link to check it out. People who want free software will move on, and people who are willing to pay for great software and support the developers who made it will make the decision whether they want to download. But misrepresenting an app like this can cause a lot of trouble that bloggers and readers never see.

What I don't like about this post is that about half of those applications aren't even Mac only, but it sounds like they are. Mac isn't everything you know.

Re: Skitch -- sure, it may become a paid app in the future and at that time would not belong on this list any longer. All the more reason to try it now, no?

Re: donationware -- unlike shareware, the "donation" part of the equation is, although encouraged, still optional -- putting donationware technically closer to freeware than not. The intent of the article was not to discourage any such payments to the developers, but to raise awareness that these apps exist... the chance you'll donate to an app you've never used is still 0, right? :) Even Skype is really a "freemium" app, but as with the donationware class how much you choose to spend on it (if at all) is up to you...

All good suggestions! All of them I use, or use another free substitute of one on this list. Instead of Tweetdeck I prefer Twitteriffic for simplicity. And instead of Boxee, Plex as a more robust, do-it-all media center.

Hi, i just would like to say keep up the posts about softare for macs. I find it really helpful thankyou! I, myself have been a mac owner for over 8 months and it has been a very enjoyable experience. I much, much prefer having a mac over a pc running windows. Apple is the ssshhhhhhiiiiiiizzzzzllllleeeee nnnnnniiizzzzzzlllllleeeeeeee!!

Decent roundup, but I think you're misrepresenting at least a couple of these apps. Skitch, for one, is in beta, and is just taking a really long time to go commercial. But eventually, it won't be free. Regardless, it'll be worth any price they finally decide on.

Some of the other apps are not free, they're donationware—a big difference. Adium is probably the most important one.

I really like the Tweetie app for Macs. I think it looks smooth and it doesn't take up the entire screen. Would recommend!
