Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 10 Awesome Things Built on the Facebook API

  • Ali · 2 years ago
Some of the stuff coming out with the Digg API isn't that bad either. Like that firefox extension Smart Digg Button checks every page you visit to see if it's already been submitted or not.

Did you know: somebody actually submitted the digg homepage back in the days when they didn't sort that out yet.
  • Adam Ostrow · 2 years ago
Yea, we covered some of the apps built on Digg API last week. We'll definitely update as more cool apps come online.

There's also Mosoto, which is great!

    Mosoto is indeed awesome.
  • Seth Lesky · 2 years ago
Thanks Pete! We think Mashable is awesome :D
Just so you know for some reason every email we've sent you recently has bounced.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Seth,

To the email address on this blog? The last one I got from Mosoto was on April 21st from "preview". I also got one from Girard on April 9th - you sent any more?
  • Nate Westheimer · 2 years ago
Definitely. I saw these folks demo at Web2Open and I thought they had a great product.

I highly recommend FacebookSync for the Mac. It essentially acts as a syncing utility for your Facebook contacts and Address Book. As an example, it might see that I have Pete Cashmores email address on my Mac, but his Facebook has his phone number, MSN/AIM alias, photo and birth date. FacebookSync will let you add the Facebook data to the entry in Address Book, or if there wasnt an existing entry for that name, offer to create a new one.

The cool part is that iCal creates a birthdays calendar based on your Address Book entries birthday information. So its all seamless and take advantage of your Facebook contacts actually keeping their information up to date as opposed to you having to fiddle around with it. Only thing it is missing is a way to pull Events I am attending and sync them to iCal.

I also swear by FBMenu, which ties in very nicely with Growl for system notifications. I can be in iTunes and receive a notification if somebody has wrote on my wall, sent a message etc; or go even more granular and receive desktop notifications when a friend updates their status.

    Twitter who?
  • James · 2 years ago
Thanks for the coverage of CampusRank. CampusRank is working on new features and the servers were recently moved to the same platform and network as twitter for better scalability. We currently have students from about 310 colleges who have signed up. One of the upcoming features: users will be able to see the top 10 lists from all schools.

CampusRank is gaining users pretty quickly. What's interesting about social networks is the first 3-6 months after launch user growth is typically flat followed by a single inflection point where the exponential growth begins. If you look at the historical trends of all major social networks the graphs all display this phenomena where the site hovers around 5,000-10,000 users until 6 months or so. I think familiarity, mindshare, and a critical mass of influential users finally deem the site "cool enough" to recommend to friends and the user growth rate takes on a very steep incline slope. In cases where user growth is controlled by the company through closed betas and invites, the flat growth rate still persists for about 3-6 months. This calm before the storm is a blessing and being used to collect feedback, bolster the infrastructure, and work on new features.

One thing that is not covered in stories about mashups and APIs is the company's behavior and support. Google for example has a stellar platform, but pretty unresponsive to the developer community. Facebook on the other hand is stunningly helpful, responsive and supportive. I suspect you will see a lot of very "awesome things" in the next few months come from the Facebook developer community. For no other reason than the connection Facebook has to college (comp. sci. students) and their very pro-developer attitudes and support.

Cool, keep us posted. I did find it a little confusing that there was nobody in any of the categories yet - you might want to put up a note of some sort to clarify that you're still just in the nomination process.

Interesting article. I've been tracking 3rd party dev with the Facebook API, but I've been waiting for more web companies to really put it to use. So far, Slide seems to have done the best job.
  • Adam Ostrow · 2 years ago
Yea, Slide did a nice job as well. I tried to stick to slightly lesser known names.
  • Daniel · 2 years ago
Wow, some of these actually look useful.
  • Norvin · 2 years ago
Has anyone created a degree of separation tool yet for facebook to see all the possibilities of how you are linked to a certain individual?
  • Carolyn · 2 years ago
I would be nice to be able to monitor pending friend requests.

I'm no developer... but if someone who is can have a go at creating an iTunes app that would be so cool!

When you're on Facebook, and have iTunes open, the app should share your selected playlist(s) on Facebook. Yeah!!
  • Bryannna Kellington · 2 years ago
I was wondering if there was a way to see all the friend requests that are pending? would be nice
  • melissa · 2 years ago

A friend of mine and I just launched our own Facebook app--Superlatives. It's the CAMPUSRANK KILLAH!

Check it out at Superlative: http://apps.facebook.com/superlative.

It's a more funny and interesting version of CampusRank. It's let you nominate people for things like "Most Likely to Appear in Playboy" or "Most Likely to Get Caught without Underwear On"

It also let's you create your own superlatives!

Woohoo! Please let us know what you think!

SocialCalendar is a fun, fresh, and easy way of tracking birthdays, anniversaries, parties and other important dates.

    - Invite friends to add their birthdays to your SocialCalendar and vice versa.

    - Share, discuss, and plan events with your friends.

    - Leave and receive personal messages on a birthday wall and enjoy them for years to come.
